Behavioral Change Communication- Baseline Assessment Workshop

UNICEF and 4 of its NGO partners namely Rachna, CID, Sambhav and Parhit have been involved in the Behavior Change Communication program for Safe Childhood in 4 blocks of Shivpuri district Madhya Pradesh. The program focuses on building up a convergent approach of development hand-in-hand with the local administration focusing on four key behaviors i.e. Exclusive Breastfeeding, Handwashing, Girl Child Education and HIV/AIDS.

A one day orientation workshop was organized on 19th February 2010 at Hotel Tourist village, Shivpuri for all the NGO partners on base line data collection on critical indicators related to the four key behaviors which will later on be updated and assessed through mid term and end term data analayis. The survey would be undertaken in 220 villages of Shivpuri district.

The workshop was coordinated by Mr.Rajeev Bhargava from IIDM, Bhopal who shared four formats for data collection namely village data, youth, women and children. Post Lunch Mr. Dheerendra Singh Jadon, DPO, WCD joined in the interaction with all the survey trainees and oriented them on various schemes being implemented by WCD to ensure reduction in IMR, MMR, Malnutrition and promotion of Girl Child Education through Laadli Laxmi Yojna, Mangal Diwas and Weighing and Pre-Education interventions.

SSHE being identified as one of the major components in the field of hygiene, mortality and disease control, Mr.Durgesh Agrawal, shared information with the participants on SSHE concepts and how the existing manforce of the BCC program can significantly contribute to better information transfer from children to the household level. Another important intervention of UNICEF and GoI is the IMNCI program focusing on ensuring survival and reduction in IMR , A session was undertaken by Mr.Shivshankar, Consultant, IMNCI, UNICEF on the concept of IMNCI and integration of BCC program in the same.

The workshop was followed by Mr.Kripashankar Yadav, Consultant, UNICEF sharing baseline data collection, updation and finding based interventions in the field, added by Mr. Nageshwar Patidar sharing on the tools and techniques of data collection.

The workshop concluded by Mr. Nabil from Sambhav highlighting the role of community workers and the importance of working in convergence with existing service delivery systems for sustainable results.
